Sarah Hawkes is a global health academic and advocate/activist. With a multidisciplinary training in sociology, medicine and a PhD in epidemiology, her work sits at the interface of research and advocacy for social policy and health policy in pursuit of social justice and fairness. Sarah has worked in a variety of research-focused organisations including icddr,b (Bangladesh), Population Council (India), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and most recently at University College London where she was Professor of Global Public Health and taught classes in Power and Politics in Global Health. For more than 30 years, Sarah has worked with and within national Governments (predominantly in South and East Asia), UN agencies and civil society organisations promoting the use of evidence to support globally shared goals of gender equality, health equity and social justice. Sarah is the co-Chair of the Lancet Commission on Gender and Global Health, a UK-Government-appointed Commissioner for the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.
