Global Health 50/50 & The Center for Research on Environment Health and Population Activities to advance action and accountability for gender equality in Nepal

Global Health 50/50’s partnership with The Center for Research on Environment Health and Population Activities (CREHPA) marks GH5050’s first country-level initiative to generate evidence, policy recommendations and action to drive gender equality and women’s empowerment in the health sector in Nepal. The formation of the partnership builds on long-standing collaboration between CREHPA and the co-Directors of GH5050 and responds to calls from national policy-makers for an accountability framework similar to the global GH5050 framework to ensure that policies and commitments are translated into action.

Since 2021, a team of researchers, advocates and communications specialists have worked to adapt the global GH5050 model to the country level, and have reviewed key workplace-related and programmatic policies of government bodies, bilateral and multilateral organisations, UN agencies, philanthropic and funders, international non-government organisations, regional organisations, and private as well as public-private partnership organisations active in Nepal. The results of the research are to be published in the inaugural report – Gender and Health 50/50 Nepal: Catalyzing change for gender equality and health equity – launching on 10 August 2022.

Throughout the project, GH5050 and CREHPA have worked to strengthen the capacity of national researchers to undertake and apply policy analysis to gender in the health sphere. The initiative has been supported and guided by a high-level national technical advisory committee.

This partnership is part of our longer-term mission to build a collaborative, interconnected community of gender and health policy collectives at the country level – of which Nepal is the first. These collectives (composed of researchers, advocates, media persons, decision makers, etc) would catalyse change at the country-level as well as create a diverse network of knowledge production, insights and critical perspectives that will inform and strengthen the global research impact of GH5050. The “theory of change” at the country level is based on the logic that if feminist leadership is strengthened, accountability mechanisms are put in place and health policies are increasingly informed by gender analysis, more effective health policies and more equitable health outcomes will follow.
