Global Health 50/50 welcomes Dr Senait Fisseha to its Advisory Council

29 June 2018— Dr Senait Fisseha, renowned leader in improving women’s access to health and promoting gender equality, has become the newest member of the Global Health 50/50 Advisory Council.

Over her distinguished career, Dr Fisseha has been committed to improving women’s health and expanding access to reproductive health services. She is the Founding Director of The Center for International Reproductive Health Training and Chief Advisor to Dr Tedros Adhamon Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization. She also serves as Director of International Programs at the Susan T. Buffett Foundation and Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Michigan Medical School.

“I am deeply honored to join the extraordinary GH5050 Advisory Council that is guiding the work of a small but mighty GH5050 team working relentlessly to make gender equality the norm through evidence, action, and accountability,” said Dr Fisseha.

Dr Fisseha has long been committed to ensuring organisations walk the talk on gender equality. Most recently she led the recruitment of Dr Tedros’ senior leadership team at WHO, which is the first senior leadership team with representatives from 14 countries and all WHO regions, 60% of whom are women.

Born in Ethiopia, Dr Fisseha went on to establish a partnership with the St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa and create The Center for International Reproductive Health Training, which has since expanded to ten medical schools in Ethiopia. Since 2015, Dr Fisseha has overseen international grant making to advance women’s health and reproductive rights at the Susan T. Buffett Foundation and has been awarded numerous awards in recognition of her outstanding commitments to improving the lives of women and children around the world, including the U-M Bicentennial Alumni Awards.

“Global Health 50/50 looks forward to benefiting from Dr Fisseha’s vast knowledge of advocating for women’s health and gender equality. Her experience of leading successful campaigns to mobilise change and influence the global health agenda will be invaluable as we move ahead in leveraging the findings of our report and pushing for organisational change,” said Professor Sarah Hawkes and Dr Kent Buse, Co-Founders of GH5050. “We are thrilled to have Dr Fisseha join our Council, and to work with her to achieve better health outcomes for all.”

The Global Health 50/50 Advisory Council is an informal group whose members serve as advocates and ambassadors for Global Health 50/50 in their personal capacities. Council members provide invaluable thought leadership and advice on good practice on global health and gender, as well as in supporting the development of the Global Health 50/50 initiative.
